Biographical Sketch

Ratna Babu Chinnam is with the Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering at Wayne State University (U.S.A.). He received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mangalore University (India) in 1988 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Engineering from Texas Tech University (U.S.A.) in 1990 and 1994, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Department at Wayne State University. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor with the Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Department at North Dakota State University from Fall of 1994 to Summer 2000. He is the author of over 50 technical publications in the areas of Intelligent Manufacturing, Advanced Quality & Reliability Engineering, Condition-Based Maintenance Systems, Operations Management, and Computational Intelligence. His publications appeared in such journals as IEEE Trans. on Reliability Engineering, IEEE Trans. on Semiconductor Manufacturing, IEEE Tran. on Neural Networks, International Journal of Production Research, and Smart Engineering System Design. His research interests include smart engineering systems, intelligent manufacturing, autonomous diagnostics and prognostics, process monitoring, manufacturing process control, quality and reliability engineering, and supply chain management. He is currently the associate editor for the International Journal of Modeling and Simulation. He regularly serves on several international conference planning committees such as IJCNN, FUZZ IEEE, ANNIE, and IASTED’s NIC. His past research is funded by such agencies as the National Science Foundation, EPSCoR, and the State of Texas. He carried out collaborative research with Ford Motor Company and DaimlerChrysler and consulted for such companies as Energy Conversion Devices and Tecton. He is a member of Alpha Pi Mu, the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS), the International Neural Network Society (INNS), and the North American Manufacturing Research Institute (NAMRI).

  • Intelligent On-line Reliability Monitoring Systems. 1996 - 1998. Developed intelligent on-line reliability monitoring systems capable of estimating on-line the risk relative to failure in physical systems through degradation signal modeling. Principal Investigator in a project partially funded by EPSCoR-NSF for $20,000.

  • Intelligent Process Quality Controllers for Advanced Manufacturing Systems. 1993 - 1995. Developed intelligent quality controllers to achieve on-line parameter design in advanced manufacturing systems. The controllers account for information regarding observable uncontrollable variables. Research Investigator and Contractor in a project funded by the State of Texas (ARP/ATP) for $81,000.

  • CAD/CAM Laboratory Development. 1992 - 1996. Assisted faculty in the development of the CAD/CAM Laboratory in the Industrial Engineering Dept., Texas Tech University. Project was funded by Southwestern Bell for $1,500,000.

  • Incremental Automation. 1991 - 1993. Research assistant investigator for a project directed toward the development of concepts related to incremental automation in manufacturing industries. Project was funded by State of Texas for $160,000.

  • Biomechanical Simulation of Manual Material Handling. 1990 - 1992. Developed a 2D biomechanical simulation model that utilizes linear optimization and dynamic programming techniques for manual material handling in the sagittal plane, in the role of a Research Assistant. Project was funded by NIOSH for $350,000.
